MERS Information
MERS Volunteers Always Ready When Large Animals Need Rescuing

You may think you've never heard about the Missouri Emergency Response Service (MERS), but chances are in the past few years you've heard on the news about some of the work this dedicated group of volunteers has done. In September of 2006, MERS volunteers helped save 26 of 42 horses that were trapped when a double-stacked horse trailer overturned and rolled on Interstate 44. A year later, MERS responded to an accident in downtown St. Louis when a tractor trailer transporting 62 bulls overturned on the Poplar Street Bridge. MERS rescue efforts in that incident began at 12:30 a.m. and didn't end until 2:00 p.m. when the group had offloaded all of the bulls and reloaded them onto an awaiting trailer.

MERS is a 100-percent volunteer team of highly trained men and women from the St. Louis metro area who provide a valuable service to not only our community, but also the entire state of Missouri and Illinois. MERS doesn't charge any fees for its rescue assistance, even though many of its volunteers must take time off from their jobs to assist with rescues. All of the volunteers' expenses, such as gasoline and food, are paid by the volunteers themselves. In addition, MERS operating expenses for things like specialized rescue equipment, uniforms, training, liability insurance, etc. are covered 100 percent through donations.

All MERS members donate their time, from the top down. The organization has no paid employees, and even the organization's president and board of directors serve without pay. To MERS members, it is wholly a labor of love.

It's a labor, however, that has been steadily increasing over the past several years, however. In 2006 MERS logged a total of 16 callouts for assistance. In 2007 the number more than doubled to end with a total of 35 callouts. As of July 10, 2008, MERS had already responded to 15 callouts.

To report a situation that requires large-animal rescue services, area residents can call the MERS emergency callout number at (636) 574-1700. To find out more about MERS and its services, go to its Web site at www.mersteam.org.

This Week's Q&A...Parked Cars Blocking Street?

Q.  How much is emergency response time delayed when they cannot get immediate access to a residence due to vehicles parked on the street and what actions are taken to clear the area?

Answer provided by St. Louis County Police Department - Wildwood Precinct

A.  A very good question and one that the police are asked at least once a year. The usual concern is the Cul De Sac's in the subdivisions of our community, especially the ones with small islands in the middle. However sometimes large gatherings at homes in a subdivision result in vehicles being parked on both sides of the street, which also causes a concern.

The fact is, emergency response of police and fire personnel has never been delayed due to vehicles being parked on streets or Cul De Sac's.  In most cases "police vehicles" can always get by parked vehicles. While this does not hold true for many pieces of fire department equipment, rest assured that depending on the emergency call, the fire department WILL NOT be delayed with their response.

Generally, routine patrols by the police address parking problems of this nature BEFORE emergency response issues develop. Or, members of the community bring parking issues of this nature to our attention and they are addressed in appropriate fashion. Usually the police will make every effort to locate the owner of vehicles parked illegally or in a fashion that would prevent the response of emergency personnel. This is accomplished almost 100% of the time and the owners move their vehicles. If the owners cannot be located, and the vehicle is parked illegally, either a citation is written or a citation is written and the vehicle is towed (depending on the circumstances). If an emergency situation presents itself, and a parked vehicle is interfering with the response of police or fire officials, emergency assistance WILL find a way to reach the concerned address, and the vehicle(s) causing the interference will be removed.
