Crime Prevention is easier than you think...

Residents of the City of Wildwood have continued to be victims of thefts from unlocked cars and open garage doors.  This however, is not a new problem.  For several years, occasional thefts have occurred, but recently, as in the past, there has been an increase in the number of incidents.

Prevention of these thefts many times is quite simple and can be accomplished by the car or home owner without cost and with little effort.  Because frequently the property being stolen is in plain view in a car that is unlocked or in a garage in which the door has been left open, by locking the car or closing the garage door, a theft will not occur.  What used to be just crimes of opportunity are now planned crimes.  By removing valuable property from view, a smashed car window might also be prevented.  It is a simple matter of attraction.  Valuable property that is easily stolen is attractive.  By removing the attraction, the crime will be stop.

In addition, police officers of the Wildwood Precinct ask residents seeing suspicious activity, particularly at night to call the police.  They request that residents be especially aware of small groups of teens wandering or driving slowly through neighborhoods checking cars.  Police officers of the Wildwood Precinct can be reached at 636-458-9194.

Is That Allowed? Code Enforcement Question of the Week...

Storage and Placement of Waste Containers and Yard Waste

Q - Where can I store/keep my waste containers outside?

A - In accordance with City Ordinance 230.070 "Storage and Placement of Waste Containers, Tree Waste and Firewood"; waste containers and yard waste must be kept, placed, or stored in a location that is not visible from the public right-of-way, to which the residential structure faces.  Many residents have difficulty finding room for waste containers in their garage or prefer not to keep them inside this area. However, keeping waste containers in an enclosed structure is the best practice, as it reduces the chances rodents will enter into the containers and cause a nuisance and it will/should prompt the occupants of the household to properly contain their waste, so it does not create a nuisance.

However, if storing or keeping waste containers inside of the garage or similar enclosed structure remains a problem, then an open enclosure should be provided, i.e. two or three sided corral.  If a resident elects to erect a corral; it is important they seek and obtain approval (if required) from the governing subdivision.  Such structures should be erected behind the established building line for the property and the structure cannot exceed six (6) feet in height.

In addition, waste cannot be placed out at the curb more than twelve (12) hours prior to the regularly scheduled collection day; approximately 6 p.m., the night prior to its pick up.  If waste containers are placed out over night, waste shall be properly contained and covered at all times; containers should not exceed fifty (50) pounds.

If you have any questions about waste pick up or schedules, please contact City Hall at 636-458-0440 or our current waste hauler Meridian Waste Services at 314-291-3131 or by e-mail at customerservice@meridianwastestl.com.  There is additonal information regarding trash and recycling, including their holiday schedule, on the City's website, and can be found via the following link:

This Week's Q & A....Final Town Center Question
Q. I am concerned about a lack of parking once all the units in the Koman Develompent are rented.  Currently parking is no problem because the development has only a smattering of occupants, but I keep hearing that a J. Buck's is going in, and there's a sports bar due to open too.  I am certain there will be a parking problem if additional occupants move into the development and business gets booming.  A cursory glance around the development is all it takes to see that a severe shortage of parking spots will occur.   Again, have you heard that same concern and does it concern Wildwood officials as well?

A. Provided by Department of Planning Staff
Adequate parking for any development is always a concern of the City and, therefore, this issue was thoroughly studied when reviewing this project.  All parking areas have been constructed within Phase I of this development, which includes on-street parking spaces.  Additionally, a public parking garage has also been constructed as part of the Phase II development (adjacent to the Wildwood Town Center Hotel). This public parking garage is two (2) stories in height and consists of approximately three hundred (300) parking spaces.  This type of structure was preferred, given the number of parking spaces it provides, with limited impact on the aesthetics of the area.  In total, approximately 1,000 parking spaces are provided within both phases of this development.

All parking requirements are based upon the City's Zoning Code and Town Center Development Manual. The general Zoning Code is available on-line, however this type of development has a site-specific Zoning Ordinance, which is available through the Department of Planning or City Clerk's office at City Hall.
