Accepted Recyclable Materials

The following is a list of recyclable materials accepted by Meridian Waste for residential curbside collection.

Commingled Containers

These items can be placed together:

  • #7 plastic resin (narrow-neck containers only)
  • Aluminum cans, trays, and foil
  • Aseptic packaging and gable top containers (milk and juice cartons)
  • Glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, and green); no window glass, dinnerware, or ceramics
  • High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) detergent and fabric softener containers (#2 colored plastic resin)
  • HDPE milk and juice jugs (#2 clear plastic resin)
  • Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) grocery containers (#4 plastic resin), such as margarine tubs, frozen dessert cups, six- and twelve-pack rings
  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) soda, water, and flavored beverage bottles (#1 clear and green plastic resin)
  • Plastic buckets, such as kitty litter containers (5-gallon size maximum)
  • PP grocery containers (#5 plastic resin); such as yogurt cups and narrow-neck syrup and ketchup bottles
  • PVC narrow-neck containers only (#3 plastic resin); such as health and beauty aid products and household cleaners
  • Steel cans and tins


  1. All containers are to be emptied and rinsed clean
  2. No motor oil, insecticide, herbicide, or hazardous chemical containers
  3. Plastic bags should be returned to grocery or department store
  4. No plastic film (plastic sheets, tarps, and wraps)
  5. #6 plastics are not recyclable
  6. No expanded foam or clear polystyrene per joint advisory from the Illinois Recycling Association, Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, and Region 5 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Residential Paper Fiber

  • Cardboard (no waxed cardboard)
  • Carrier stock (soda and beer can carrying cases)
  • Chipboard (cereal, cake, and food mix boxes, gift boxes, etc.)
  • Junk mail and envelopes (no plastic cards, stick-on labels, or unused stamps)
  • Kraft (brown paper) bags
  • Magazines, catalogs, and telephone books
  • Newspaper, including inserts (remove plastic sleeves)
  • Office, computer, notebook, and gift wrap paper (no metal clips, spirals, or binders)
  • Paperback books (no hard cover books)
